Requirements for lighting at delivery points at night

At a time when energy prices are sky-high, it’s understandable that many people have chosen to save power by switching off lights in and around their buildings. Unfortunately, it’s contrary to the Danish Working Environment Authority’s requirements for minimum lighting on access roads, transport routes, traffic areas and delivery points when working in the dark.

In all places where work is carried out during the hours of darkness, a minimum lighting level of 25 lux is required. This is the lighting needed for people and vehicles to move safely. This also applies to when we have to deliver goods at night. We recommend setting up sensors, so the light is only activated during deliveries. Below is an extract from the Danish Working Environment Authority’s website on lighting requirements.

The lighting of access roads, transport routes and traffic areas shall be such that illuminance at all times meets the requirement of an average illuminance, Emid, of at least 25 lux at a horizontal plane at traffic level, i.e. at all locations where traffic is moving, e.g. ground level, floor level, on scaffolding, etc.

The requirement for average illuminance applies to naturally defined areas. These may be, for example, the corridor in site accommodation, an access road, etc. Therefore, the requirement should not be understood as a requirement for the average illuminance over all traffic areas taken as a whole. High illuminance in one part of a building site cannot compensate for low illuminance in another part of the building site.

We hope our customers will help us ensure that pick-up and delivery addresses comply with the Danish Working Environment Authority’s requirements so that our drivers can make deliveries safely.

Thank you in advance.
