From Customer Service Representative to Team Leader in Operations
29 September 2023
Mette Holmann Jørgensen left the customer service department at Danske Fragtmænd in 2018, after working there for three years. She needed a change of scenery and wanted to try something new. Today she works as Team Leader in operations at Danske Fragtmænd Odense.
An overseas stay and a job as warehouse worker helped Mette Holmann Jørgensen come to the realization that a sedentary office job wasn’t the right job for her. She needed a job where she could use her body physically. When Mette Jørgensen was contacted by a former colleague from Danske Fragtmænd in 2021, that's exactly what she got.
Mette Holmann Jørgensen is Team Leader at Danske Fragtmænd Odense
- I had sworn that I would never go back to Danske Fragtmænd. So, when they called to ask if I would be interested in a position as Floor Manager at Danske Fragtmænd Odense, I was very doubtful. At the same time, I saw it as an exciting challenge, so I ended up accepting the position, says Mette Holmann Jørgensen.
After six months as Floor Manager, Mette Holmann Jørgensen was offered the position as Team Leader in operations. A job she had no prior experience with, as she had never held leadership responsibilities and could not load a trailer.
- I have no idea how to load a trailer. Luckily, my team knows exactly how to do that. On the other hand, I can move goods and help out at the packing station when needed. I enjoy the combination of physical work and managerial tasks. I had no management experience, and in the first months, it was tough being a new, young leader of a large team. Fortunately, everyone has welcomed me very warmly, and I listen to the input my team provides.
As a company, Danske Fragtmænd aims to be a workplace with good development opportunities, both horizontally and vertically. Mette Holmann Jørgensen's career at Danske Fragtmænd is a great example of this.
- It's great that you're not stuck in one department. Moving to operations has been really good for me. I'm also very grateful for the opportunity to take a leadership course and develop my skills as a leader. I find leadership exciting. It motivates me to see the camaraderie we are building within my team.
The leadership course Mette Holmann Jørgensen is taking is an external leadership program at UCL University College. However, as the number of leadership positions at Danske Fragtmænd is limited, horizontal development will also receive increased attention in the future. HR Development Manager Frederik Madsbjerg explains:
- Previously, we haven't emphasized the development opportunities whitin Danske Fragtmænd as much. Often, we tend to think vertically when an employee expresses a desire to advance or develop. In the future, we need to be better at highlighting the opportunities that exist across Danske Fragtmænd.
In addition to Danske Fragtmænd's mandatory leadership program, the company offers various internal and external courses that focus on the competencies and skills that employees may need at Danske Fragtmænd.
