Danske Fragtmænd increases its number of female managers
12 March 2018
28 of the total of 145 managers in Danske Fragtmænd are women. Two of them are Purchasing Manager Gitte Kalmar Jacobsen and Finance Director Anja Borup Grosen, who are both based at the Head Office in Aarhus, Denmark. Read their views on female life in the corridors of management.
There is no denying that Danske Fragtmænd has many male employees. In recent years, women have nevertheless increased their presence in the corridors of management.
“Being a female executive in a male-dominated business isn’t really something I think about. I’ve never strived to become a manager. It has simply happened over time. New situations are constantly occurring which you must take into account, which means that no two days are the same. I've got the best job in the world and I thrive in it,” starts Gitte.
For her, it is all about the employees’ competencies. She continues: “For me, it doesn’t matter whether the executives are women or men; as long as you are qualified for the job. You should hold the position because you’re good enough for it. Nor do I support requirements that a specific number of women must be on the board of directors. It must be a matter of competencies.
Hard work pays
Anja agrees completely with that notion; according to her, it is even more simply about hard work: “To me, it is simply about putting in your best possible work. I believe that as long as you work hard enough, everything will sort itself out. Never mind if the joke at the conference table is that you are the only one under forty and of the opposite sex; for everyone actually knows that it’s irrelevant.”
Becoming a manager was not a specific objective for Anja either. Just like Gitte, the opportunity presented itself and it was a matter of grabbing the opportunity when it presented itself.
“Ending up as a manager hasn’t been a specific goal for me. It wasn’t exactly something I thought about when I started as a student assistant nearly eleven years ago. It was only when the opportunity arose that it became an actual goal. In fact, at each promotion, I already had many of the work tasks which I was then given responsibility for at the time, and each transition has therefore felt natural. It’s obviously always a big mouthful, but, after all, it’s merely an extra challenge that you must meet,” concludes Anja.
